The international council of societies of industrial design has chosen Helsinki design capital of the world for 2012. For this rank 46 cities from 27 countries of the world struggled. The international jury has selected two finalists – the Dutch Eindhoven (Eindhoven) became the contender of Helsinki, but he has lost competition.
“It is enormous success for Helsinki. A rank of design capital of the world very important for us and the cities of Espoo co-operating with us (Espoo), (Vantaa), Kauniajnen (Kauniainen) and Lahti (Lahti)”, – the mayor of Helsinki has declared to Vantaa Jussi Pajunen.
The advertising campaign of capital of design will pass under a slogan “Open for itself Helsinki – a city in which the design everywhere”, informs World Design Capital. The rank will bring Helsinki a large quantity of the events anyhow connected with design, and also possibility of the conclusion of the transactions, favourable to all region.

Helsinki becomes the third design capital of the world – after Turin (2008) and Seoul (2010). The city by right has deserved this honorary title. Since 2005 here there is a whole design area (Design District) in which shops, show-rumy, workshops and galleries of the majority of city designers and artists work. The area is one of the major tourist places of interest of Helsinki.
